Get to Know the Film Festival’s New Chairman Chandi

At last month’s Palm Springs International Film Festival and Awards Gala, we all met a new, enthusiastic face: Nachhattar Singh Chandi. As the newly-appointment Chairman, Chandi is following in the footsteps of Immediate Past Chairman Harold Matzner. The two are close friends, talking daily. Chandi even calls Harold his “godfather.”

Chandi spoke with Desert Magazine by The Desert Sun in January, sharing his amazing story.  When Chandi was a boy, his village in India only had one television. Now, he’s walking the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala red carpet with Oscar-winning stars.

Chandi grew up in India, came to America, and is now a true example of the American Dream. He went from India to Indio with no money and no knowledge of English. He started working at a gas station, which he saved up to buy. Now he runs a local business empire and gives back as a philanthropist.

His involvement in our Desert community is how he came to meet Harold Matzner. While the pair had been friends for a while, they truly bonded over the General Patton Museum. “I was not able to serve in our military here,” Chandi said, “but I have a lot of respect for the men and women who keep us safe. It was a token of love for me to do that. They put Harold’s name on the Matzner Tank Pavilion and my name on one of the small buildings. That was very special to me.”

Then came Chandi’s involvement with the Palm Springs International Film Festival after Harold invited him eight years ago. “I can sincerely say that my involvement and passion for the film festival started from the very first moment I set foot on the red carpet in my first year as a guest.”

That passion was quite clear as Chandi chaired his first Festival this year! The 2024 Festival raised $2.8 million for charity and made news all over the world.
