What does the Palm Springs Film Society do outside the Film Festival?

The 2024 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala raised $2.8 million for the Palm Springs International Film Society, a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization whose mission is to cultivate and promote the art and science of film through education and cross-cultural awareness. A wonderful example of the Film Society’s programming took place during this year’s Film Festival, as we hosted two days of student screenings for high school students in Coachella Valley. According to The Desert Sun, over 1,000 students in film and visual arts classes, as well as students in impact programs, were in attendance.

“We hope that the films open your eyes to a new world, inspire you and help to inspire others because the more we learn about others, we learn about ourselves,” Jennifer Van Camp, programming and education coordinator for the Palm Springs International Film Society, said to the students.

The screenings, held at Indio High School and Palm Springs High School, showcased the documentary Team Meryland and the film Going Varsity In Mariachi.

Team Meryland filmmaker Meryland Gonzalez told NBC Palm Springs, “I just had such a fun time and I think it was really great having to meet the students and for them to ask questions. I felt like I was talking to people I knew for a long time. They’re really great kids. I just thought it was really nice to share my story and hope to inspire them as well.”

The film festival’s annual gala raises funds for the Film Society’s educational programs, including the student screenings.
